Geoscience Agent for GEOFON
Live access to a global seismic network and its archive, at the GFZ Helmholtz Centre.
GEOFON is the seismological data centre of the GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences and part of the European ORFEUS and EIDA networks. It operates a global seismic network and an open archive of earthquake events, stations and waveform data that geoscientists across Europe work with every day.
I built an agent that answers questions against it.
What it does
It has a semantic index over GEOFON’s published material: the web content, the annual reports from 2016 to 2022, publications, the SeisComP documentation, related projects such as SUBMERSE. That’s what lets it understand a geoscientific question in the first place.
Through MCP it also holds a live connection to GEOFON’s own API endpoints. It searches events, retrieves stations, checks data availability and runs waveform analysis on current data.
So a question like “which events above magnitude 5 did the network record in this region last month, and what do the waveforms look like” can be answered end to end, in one place.

Where it stands
I showed it to colleagues at GEOFON and the response was good. They found it interesting and could see where it would fit into their own work.
The GFZ is a Helmholtz institute, so anything that connects to its systems goes through a data protection review before it’s used more widely. The seismic data itself is open, which is what made building this possible in the first place. The review concerns the software around it and is currently running.
